Stone Masonry Arch Bridge: Case study

At HONE SHM, we take pride in preserving the architectural heritage of India through advanced Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques. One of our recent projects involved the assessment and monitoring of a historic stone masonry arch bridge, constructed in 1848.
Structural Health Monitoring
Heritage structures are invaluable assets that require specialized monitoring and maintenance to ensure their longevity. This bridge, standing strong for over 175 years, required a comprehensive evaluation to assess its structural health and propose strengthening solutions.
To gain a thorough understanding of the bridge’s condition, we implemented a range of SHM techniques, including:
Tilt Monitoring: Evaluating the angular displacement and stability of the structure. Vibration Monitoring: Measuring dynamic responses to detect structural weaknesses. Crack Growth Monitoring:Tracking the progression of cracks to assess potential risks.
Load Rating & Strengthening Suggestions
In addition to monitoring, we conducted a Load Rating analysis to determine the bridge’s capacity to withstand current and future loads. Based on the findings, we proposed targeted strengthening measures to enhance its durability while maintaining its historic integrity.

Here is a glimpse into a project of Hone Structural Health Monitoring (India) Pvt Ltd, where we conducted dynamic testing on a steel railway bridge in Maharashtra. Our focus was on monitoring the vibration and deflection caused by the high-speed VandeBharat passenger train.

The structure was also monitored during the movement of a design locomotive with a calibrated weight.

Utilized laser sensors for real-time deflection and tri-axial wireless accelerometers for vibration monitoring.
Monitored the bridge with the high-speed Passenger train Vande Bharat. The structure was also monitored for the movement of design locomotive with a calibrated weight. πŸ’‘
